Rory Golod is promoted to President of Compass Real Estate Agents in the New York Tristate area.
Rory Golod began his real estate career in 2014 as a strategy and business development partner for compass.
He spent about two years building the brokerage business in the New York area before becoming Chief of Staff to Founder and CEO Robert Reffkin.
In 2018 he was given the opportunity to take on the role of General Manager for the New York region. Today Golod is the President of the entire Tristate, oversees 68 offices in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
To put the brokerage house’s regional success in perspective, Compass was ranked number two on The Real Deal’s list of top brokerages in New York City in 2020, generating over $ 4 billion in revenue.
Goold’s path to leadership is filled with mentors, lessons, and integrity. During an interview with Inman, he revealed the three moments that made his career in one of the largest brokerage firms in the country.
During his tenure as Reffkin’s chief of staff, Golod came to the realization that the agents are the brokerage company’s clients, and so is it changed the way he approached his job.
To this day, Golod wonders: “Do you listen to your customers? Do you really let your customers determine the strategy of your company? ”
The real customers of any brokerage firm, he told Inman, are the agents because it is they who make the money. To be successful as a business, a broker must create a system that is tailored to the broker’s needs.
Reffkin, Golod continues, firmly believes that not only is the agent the customer, but that listening to them and getting their feedback is the key to the company’s progress.
That mindset rubbed off on Golod and has since enabled him to better adjust to the people he leads.
“The realtor is the real center not just of the transaction, but of the entire residential real estate ecosystem. You’re the glue that holds everything together, ”he said. “Being clear about this has enabled us to be more effective and to focus on who we are creating value for, and hopefully faster.”
The birth of his daughter
Golod welcomed his daughter to the world last summer.
“The most important lesson from this, apart from the fact that I think it’s the most beautiful thing in the world, is the value and importance of having something that drives your passion,” he told Inman.
When he had to leave his daughter to go to work, he realized the importance of having a job that he loves.
“It has to be meaningful because there is something else that has this insanely powerful force that pulls you back to them. If you want to be away from them, it has to be something that gives you meaning, that gives you meaning, ”he said.
Golod’s wife gave birth to their daughter during the pandemic, which put life in perspective for him. He told Inman that they couldn’t hold their baby together until it was brought home from the hospital. But even in these unprecedented times, he could count his blessings.
“I think it reminded us all of how lucky we are, even in difficult and adverse moments,” he said.
A lesson from his stepfather
Golod told Inman that his stepfather is one of the most influential people in his life. When he was growing up, he always said to Golod: “Everything in life can be taken from you. The only thing you can give away is your integrity. “
When Golod helped grow Compass, that phrase stuck in his mind, and so did I.Integrity became the backbone of his career.
Integrity, he said, goes beyond honesty and trustworthiness; it sums up how you treat people.
“Do you present the welfare of others as a guideline for you?” He asked.
He told Inman that the fellowship at Compass is built on love, compassion, and of course, integrity.
His ultimate goal is to show the world that the widely accepted negative perception of the real estate profession is far from the truth.
